Electronic Medication Administration (eMAR) – Positive Patient Identification

Positive Patient Identification is now available for Electronic Medication Administration (eMAR).

Positive Patient ID improves the quality of the patient care. Positive Patient Identification uses a handheld scanner to scan the barcode on the patient’s wristbands and medications. It serves as a protection to assure patient safety in the delivery of medication.

With Positive Patient Identification, a nurse scans the patient’s arm bracelet barcode and the medication barcodes, before and after administering medications. The bar code on the patient’s wristband is used to identifies the patient and access the patient’s drug profile to determine that there is an order for the medication.

Using patient identification reduces medication administration errors, keeps patients safe and saves on medical costs.

The MDS 3.0 application continues to support the older MDS 2.0 history records and they can be viewed by the MDS 3.0 application. Thus there will continue to be a continuous record of the patient’s MDS assessments.
